The 10th Young Scholar Forum for Medical and Environmental History in East Asia, co-organized by Environmental History Group in the Institute of Taiwan History, Academia Sinica, will be held on 17-19 March, 2023 in Taiwan. The forum was launched in 2012 by environmental and medical historians from Taiwan, Japan, China, and Korea etc. It aims to create a transnational communication platform for young scholars and provide opportunities for graduate students to present in English. It is also expected to acquaint young scholars and students with overseas research trends and help them connect with researchers working in the same field. Taking place at the National Dong Hwa University (NDHU), Hualien, 17-19 March 2023, the Forum seek to discuss local characteristics in medical or environmental issues in East Asia, as well as how digital humanities could help for historical research. In addition to paper presentations, student attendees will also be able to get familiar with local ecology, history, and culture via excursions.

Rules of Proceedings

  1. Each paper is allotted 15 minutes for presentation, followed by a 10-minute commentary period and a 5-minute general discussion period.
  2. During the general discussion period, other attendees may ask questions or the presenter may respond to comments made during the commentary period.
  3. Two minutes before the end of the paper presentation and commentary period, a bell will ring to remind everyone. When time is up, a second bell will ring, indicating that the speaker should conclude their remarks.
  4. Two minutes before the start of the meeting, a bell will ring to prompt attendees to take their seats as soon as possible.
  5. During the meeting, please turn off your mobile phone or switch it to silent mode.

Dr. Adam Horálek Associate Professor Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Pardubice, Czech Republic

Dr. Horálek is associate professor of the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Pardubice, Czech Republic. He received his first PhD in ethnology at Charles University in Czech Republic in 2011, and got his second PhD in geography at the same university. He was the head of the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Pardubice. During the years as the head of the department, he has established strong international links with many academic institutions, such as National Dong Hwa University and Soochow University in Taiwan. In recent years, Dr. Horálek’s research focuses on ethnicity and nationalism, anthropology of aging, Chinese ethnic minorities and Chinese overseas.

March 18th Afternoon, We will visit Ji'An Township(a former Japanese immigrant village) for cultural and historical sites, waterwheel, and rural countryside on bicycles, with local cuisine included.
